UltraCap Capsule Test

Purpose

Assess the mechanical integrity of UltraCap encapsulated capsules and confirm that the encapsulated active ingredient is released under the intended downhole pressure and temperature trigger conditions. The test validates treatment timing and release behaviour before capsules are deployed in the wellbore.

Equipment

  • Sample of UltraCap capsules (specified batch)
  • Pressure cell or circulation loop capable of reaching trigger pressure
  • Heating bath or oven (for temperature-triggered capsules)
  • Graduated cylinder
  • Visual inspection tray
  • Drilling fluid sample (base mud)

Procedure

  1. Count and weigh a representative sample of capsules; inspect for visible damage or pre-release.
  2. Add the capsules to the base mud sample at the recommended concentration.
  3. Circulate or agitate the mixture under ambient conditions for a defined period to verify capsules survive normal surface handling.
  4. Apply the trigger condition (specified pressure, temperature, or combined) as per the product data sheet.
  5. Allow the system to equilibrate under trigger conditions for the specified hold time.
  6. Sample the fluid and check for evidence of capsule rupture and active-ingredient release (e.g. visible shell fragments, change in fluid properties, or chemical assay as specified).

Notes

  • Record batch number, capsule concentration, trigger conditions (temperature/pressure), and hold time.
  • Compare fluid properties before and after trigger to quantify release (e.g. change in viscosity, pH, or additive concentration).
  • Capsules that rupture prematurely under ambient conditions indicate damaged stock; reject and do not deploy.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s product data sheet for specific trigger thresholds and acceptance criteria.
